Professional body piercers know that some types of body piercing require specialized tools. One example of such a piercing is a septum piercing, which is the piercing of the base area of cartilage that separates the nostrils in the nose. This piercing requires the use of a special type of clamp, called a septum clamp.
The septum clamp features two small aligning ‘tunnels’ that when positioned, actually create a guide for the needle. Although a septum piercing may be done with success as a free hand piercing, it is generally inadvisable to do so since the septum clamps provide almost fool-proof piercing. Septum clamps are available from companies that sell piercing supplies online and can be purchased made of steel or disposable plastic.
